Are you waiting to be happy?

I have noticed that I have a tendency to think that happiness comes from things outside of myself, and I believe this is in our culture too. When I have that job, that house, that money, that person, that cake, that holiday then I will be happy.

The art of distraction

This morning I decided to send an email out for upcoming events to subscribers. I started the email, then decided to setup the events on my website. Then I got distracted by the internet. Then by email. Then by Facebook...

Sat Nam — what's that all about?

Kundalini Yoga, I have to admit, is one of the more spiritual forms of yoga. I absolutely love the experience of it, the effect it has in my life and I am incredibly grateful for how it has changed me and my life. But I don't like the word spiritual. It is so hippy!

It's all in the name

Amrit Jiwan is probably a terrible name for my business from one point of view. It means nothing to the vast majority of people, it is actually pronounced Amrit JEEVAN so many people might spell it wrong if they know how to say it, or pronounce it wrong if they don't - haha!

Valentine's Day

It is Valentine's day and personally I am not a big fan. In fact I am on the train to see my family with the blessing of my fella. Sweetheart that he is, he gave me a gift last night without any concern that I hadn't got him anything!

Sleep meditation

Recently I recorded a guided meditation for my sister to help with getting to sleep. Meditation is actually about staying awake, but have you noticed that when you want to stay awake you find it hard not to fall asleep, and when you really want to go back to sleep you can't help staying awake?

There is a crack in everything

I am in the middle of redecorating my meditation room to make it into an even more beautiful space so I can use it for healing.  Two of the walls and the ceiling had lots of cracks in and the other walls had wallpaper with small bubbles along the edges....

New Year Intentions

The new year is a time to set intentions for the year and perhaps rather than making the same ones that you always do. Whether that's to be healthier / lose weight / drink less / exercise more / improve work-life balance or something else. Perhaps instead listen to what you really want.

Christmas roleplay

Maybe you will be seeing family this year, it is after all the traditional thing to do. And perhaps you are really looking forward to it, and maybe you are dreading it? Or something in between?! So I thought I would share some fascinating group dynamics information that I learnt over the summer that may help you or interest you.

About Time

Time is a funny thing, sometimes it seems to stretch out endlessly, like when I'm holding a very uncomfortable posture in yoga! And other times it seems to fly by — a 20 minute meditation can feel like a few mins, or the reverse!! I remember someone saying about parenthood that the days can seem endless and yet the years flash by.

Caring: A shift in perspective

As I was wondering what I would write this week, I remembered Ajahn Brahm, a Theravadan Buddhist monk who I saw last year and whose stories I found very thought-provoking. He told the story of a young doctor who couldn't save...

The power of mantra

Yesterday a gong arrived in the post. Not a small thing, a large 24-inch work of art that now vibrates in our spare bedroom furthest away from the neighbours. It is a lovely thing creating complex layers of sound that you feel throughout the body as well as hear. Its mantra is Ong. It is the only thing it can say, although it can say it in different ways.

And repeat...

I have been gathering up all my old meditation newsletters and I have noticed that some of my themes do keep getting repeated. I do apologise if you've noticed too! I guess I normally write about what is coming up for me, and some of these themes seem to need a lot of practice!

Being vertical

A friend came up with a wonderful phrase this week, he decided he was going to be more vertical, after realising that he'd been being too laid back, too horizontal, in some areas of his life. I found it rather inspiring — it spoke to me of being honest, being straight and being empowered.

The nature of humans and trees

This week I spent a day attempting to teach primary school children about mindfulness with varying degrees of success. The morning the classes went ok, less ok, ok, amazing. Some of the kids got it and some of them didn't. And at lunchtime whilst I was thinking about what I had done wrong...
